Within our fast-paced world, it is easy to forget the importance of looking after our mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. We often switch on autopilot to try and get through the never-ending to-do lists without recognising the damage this is doing until it’s too late.

Taking time out of your busy schedule to focus on yourself can have a positive effect on your physical and mental health. Everyone has different ways to boost their wellbeing, so it can take trying a couple of different things to work out what’s best for you. But be kind to yourself, give yourself time and don’t give up because it will be worth it when you find it.

Here are 5 simple ways to boost your well-being

Spending time in nature

It has been well researched that being in nature can have a positive effect on your mental health. Spending time in nature can help lower stress levels, improve symptoms of depression, and significantly help to increase wellbeing. Try and make some time for yourself to enjoy a walk in a local park, forest or on the beach.

Connection is key

Humans are social creatures and we have relied on this to survive and flourish throughout history. Therefore, it is so important we maintain social contact with others. If we go without it, it can be detrimental to our mental health.

Laughing with others releases feel-good chemicals in our body known as endorphins which will give a boost to your mood and relieve stress. So, meeting up with friends or family regularly is one of the best ways to boost your wellbeing.

Physical health

Looking after your physical health is an important step to boost wellbeing. Eating a balanced diet, getting a good night’s rest, and doing regular exercise are small changes you can do that will make all the difference.

Managing stress is also an important thing to do when looking after your physical health. Take time to relax and unwind whenever you can. This can be taking a bubble bath, going for a swim, or visiting your local cafe, whatever works for you.

Take up a hobby

Give yourself permission to do something that you enjoy. Research has shown that learning a new skill can improve mental wellbeing. It doesn’t matter what you do, what is important is that you take time out regularly to do something that brings you joy. If you are stuck for ideas here are a few suggestions but the possibilities are endless.

•           Do something crafty

•           Join a local sports group

•           Read around a subject you enjoy

•           Gardening

•           Cooking class

•           Hiking

•           Learn to play an Instrument

•           Learning a new language

•           Volunteer

Be Present

Living in the present is easier said than done but being stuck thinking about the past and the future means we forget to appreciate the here and now. Mindfulness is one tool that can help you become more present and can be practiced anywhere from brushing your teeth, taking a walk, or just sitting in a chair. It can be difficult to get started but with practice, it will get easier. It can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, making it easier to manage them and not get overwhelmed. This is a powerful tool that can help improve your overall wellbeing.
